While culling photos seems like an easy task, anyone who has tried it will tell you it’s much more difficult than you might think.
You need to ensure that each and every photo that you deliver to your clients meets the highest quality standards, while also delivering them on time (after all, if they want the photos now, they want them now).
It’s best to outsource this job to professionals or even use specialized software, but if that isn’t an option, here are seven of the best free photo culling software programs available today so you can get started as soon as possible.
FastStone Image Viewer
It’s a free photo management software you can use on your computer. You can browse, view, organize, manage, edit and present your images in so many ways with it.
It supports popular graphic formats including JPEG, BMP, PNG, PSD, TIFF etc. The handy image viewer tool also enables you to enhance your images by adjusting brightness/contrast/color/sharpness etc. Its batch rename function is powerful enough to rename multiple files at once as well as create subfolders or add text strings in a snap! What’s more?
This awesome image viewer software can also be used as an image converter – you can easily convert images between almost all popular graphics formats like JPG (JPEG), PNG, GIF etc!
PicPick
For avid photographers who want a simple interface, PicPick is a superb choice. The software has some of the best features around, including numerous hotkeys that can be customized, enabling quick access to all settings.
Users can also use tools such as blur and sharpen effects, rotate images, change colors with a variety of filters or easily scan websites or documents. Its user-friendly interface enables those who are not so tech-savvy to perform basic tasks without much of a problem.
It’s free to download and use, but you may need to pay if you want extra features like advanced editing options. If you’re looking for a simple photo culling tool, however, PicPick offers an excellent solution.
Fotor
Though primarily a photo editing tool, Fotor's got some pretty nifty photo culling features. If you're looking for a simple way to quickly sort through photos and pull out your favorites, check it out. They've also got a neat feature that allows you to see how your selected pictures will look in different formats, sizes and types of frames. Click here to download.
It is so easy! Just open up Fotor, import your images from Facebook or Instagram (or any other social media site), drag them into your favorite album or just select them one by one from an existing album and let Fotor do its magic. It will automatically create great-looking collages, posters, calendars or cards within seconds.
Picktorial
This photo culling software is available in both a paid desktop version (at $119.99) and a free mobile app, Picktorial brings high-end photo editing features to both PCs and Macs. The design is beautiful, making it easy to organize your photos into albums so you can find them quickly whenever you need them. You can also browse photos by keyword, filter by date or view events.
It’s simple enough that beginners will feel comfortable using it, but powerful enough that more advanced users will be able to take advantage of all its tools without any trouble. Whether you’re trying to build an album for a client or simply want to make sure your own photo library is organized, Picktorial is an excellent choice.
Graphic Converter
This multipurpose app does a lot of different things, but for our purposes we’re focusing on its capabilities as a photo resizer and pixellator. The sheer number of options in Graphic Converter makes it easy to create files of all sizes while maintaining an acceptable level of quality, which is ideal when you’re trying to build up a portfolio. You can even apply various filters and effects like sepia, grayscale, blurring, or colorizing—which means you don’t have to worry about plugins if your photos need quick adjustments. You may also want to try...
SumoPaint
Perfect For Beginners... & Not-So-Beginners. One of my favorite free photo culling software programs is SumoPaint, an open source program that actually has a lot of advanced features. For example, it supports layers, an uncommon feature in free photo culling software but one I use almost daily when creating social media images.
It also supports adjustment layers which allow you to fine tune your colors without making permanent changes. I also like that SumoPaint doesn't require any additional tools (like Photoshop) to create some advanced effects. You can add blurriness, bumpiness or even hue shift within SumoPaint with ease—even if you've never used photo editing software before!
Photoshop Express Editor
The Photoshop Express Editor is a simplified photo editor that lets you crop, brighten, adjust color and more. It’s even great for quick fixes like removing dust or unwanted objects from your photos. The software is available through Adobe's Creative Cloud service; however, it can also be downloaded from Adobe's website.Currently, there is no standalone application available. You need to login with your Adobe ID in order to use it (You may need to install adobe reader first).
Once you have logged in or created an account (it’s free!), you can start using all of its awesome features right away! Some of my favorite features include: Auto-correct: This feature allows you to easily fix little problems with a few quick clicks. For example, if you take a picture on an overcast day and find that there are white spots throughout your image due to light reflecting off of small particles in the air, just click auto-correct and watch as those spots disappear! Crop tool: A lot of people don't realize how easy it is to quickly crop photos using Photoshop Express. Just select crop from under tools on top then drag across your image to choose which area you want to keep.
You can also rotate or flip images if needed. Add effects: There are tons of fun effects built into Photoshop Express including black & white, sepia tone, solarize and much more!
