Yes, it takes a lot more work this way, but I find it's more rewarding than all the other ways that people try to make money. It takes me days or weeks to build each app (I think this one will be my tenth), and then I spend hours promoting it in an attempt to gain installs on the free version. When people like my apps enough, they'll download the paid version which costs a few dollars or euros and pays back their time many times over. Giving apps away for free has enabled me to take months off of work so that I can recharge my creative batteries.
